  6. There are now two versions of "The Grouch":
  7.   "The Grouch" - a System Extension (version 2.5)
  8.   "Stand-Alone Grouch" - an Application (version 2.5)
  9.  
  10. The Extension version of "The Grouch" plays an animation
  11. every time "Empty Trash" is selected from the Finder's
  12. "Special" menu.  This version must be placed into your System
  13. Folder (or Extensions folder under System 7) and you must
  14. "Restart" your system for it to work.
  15.  
  16. The Application version was created after several parents
  17. informed me that their children liked "The Grouch" so much
  18. they threw out all of the files on their hard disks.  This version
  19. is child-proof as far as I can tell since it is completely self-
  20. contained.  It does not modify the Finder and draws the animation
  21. in a window instead of on the desktop.  It does not require the
  22. Extension to be present.

  24. "The Grouch" requires either System 6.0x or System 7 on a 
  25. MacPlus or later.  If the animation doesn't play, chances are that 
  26. memory is too tight to load in the pictures.  Let me know if you find 
  27. any incompatibilities.

  29. COMMON PROBLEMS
  30. • The Extension won't work if you modify your trash can icon
  31. • When using a utility that can turn off Extensions (like InitPicker),
  32.    be sure The Grouch is enabled. If you get a copy of The Grouch
  33.    from a friend that was using this type of utility, make sure
  34.    the Extension is enabled on their machine *before* copying the
  35.    file because some of these utilities disable extensions by 
  36.    modifying the file type.
  37. • Low memory  (not much we can do about this one)
  38.  
  39. Improvements over 2.5B3:
  40.   Fixed incompatibility with NS-SCSI disk driver 
  41.         (sold by APS and several other vendors)
  42.  
  43. Improvements over 2.5 B1:
  44.    Support for non-English Systems (thanks Jean-Philippe)
  45.    Better small icon
  46.    One "improvement" in the animation has been removed since
  47.      nobody seemed to like it.
  48.  
  49. Improvements over version 2.0:
  50.    The Application version is completely new
  51.    Works with System 7 Final
  52.    Animation has been improved a bit (color trash, better alignment)
  53.    The startup icon automatically wraps to the next row if you have
  54.       lots of Extensions
  55.    The Extension can be renamed without rebooting (System 7 only)
  56.    The Extension code has be rewritten to be better/stronger/faster.

  65. really bored, this will probably be the last version of Grouch
  66. produced.
